To successfully import a vehicle to Kenya, you must comply with key regulations set by government bodies like the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Failure to meet these rules can result in penalties or the vehicle being denied entry.
The Three Core Rules for Kenya:
- Age Limit: A vehicle must not be more than eight years from its date of first registration. For example, in 2025, you can only import vehicles manufactured in 2018 or later.
- Right-Hand Drive (RHD): All vehicles imported for use in Kenya must be Right-Hand Drive. Special exemptions for LHD vehicles (like ambulances) exist but are rare for personal cars.
- Pre-Export Roadworthiness Inspection: A mandatory inspection must be carried out in the country of origin by a KEBS-approved body (e.g., QISJ, JEVIC). This ensures the vehicle meets Kenyan safety and environmental standards before it is shipped.
