Guidelines for Returning Residents

Residents returning to Kenya after living abroad may be eligible for duty exemptions on one vehicle. This is a special provision to facilitate resettlement, but it comes with strict conditions set by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Key Conditions for Duty Exemption:

  • You must be changing residence permanently from a place outside Kenya.
  • You must have resided outside Kenya for at least two years.
  • The vehicle must have been owned and used by you for at least 12 months before your return.
  • The vehicle must be compliant with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) requirements, including being Right-Hand Drive (RHD) and meeting the age limit rule.

Proof of ownership, residency abroad, and your return to Kenya will be required. This is a complex process, and we highly recommend consulting with our specialists to ensure you meet all criteria before shipping a vehicle.
